Two things that often go together but can pose a threat to personal safety is manual labor and high temperatures. The summer months are ideal for moving for many different reasons but that is also when the thermometer tends to top out, nearing triple digit readings. Stay safe with these tips from our residential movers.

Wear Lightweight, Breathable Clothing

Clothing items that are breathable and moisture-wicking are an ideal choice for moving during warmer temperatures. This includes athleisure items that move comfortably but aren’t significantly loose-fitting. We also recommend a good pair of work gloves to protect your hands and closed-toe shoes to protect your feet.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water is vital as the temperatures rise. You’ll lose plenty of water through perspiration as you’re doing a lot of manual labor in the heat. We recommend keeping plenty of bottled water available for everyone who is helping with the move. Also, maximize the opportunity to create cross-ventilation streams by strategically opening opposing windows and doors. You’ll be going in and out so often that it doesn’t make sense to run the AC full blast, but airflow can help.

Know Your Limits

All the preparation can go a long way, but you can still overdo it. Be mindful of what your body is telling you and be sure to take frequent small breaks. High-protein snacks with low carbohydrate content are best. We recommend nuts, cheese, and dried fruit to help power you through the day.

The Bottom Line

Don’t underestimate the workload of a big move. It can be very physically demanding in ways that your body isn’t accustomed to working. Plan for a full day of physical activity, including proper attire, hydration, and nutrition. And, consider making the load a little easier by hiring a professional moving company to help get the job done. Foster Van Lines has more than three decades of experience as a reputable moving company. Our long-distance movers can help with the heavy lifting.
